Active Server Pages are server side scripts those allow process of data at server side. These scripts are
simple text files like HTML pages on the server which contain scripting code. You can then save the feedback
of your visitors, vote for some subject, keep a track of visitors using Active Server Pages.
These pages need a server software for their execution. These pages are run mainly on a Windows®
platform. Microsoft® has given an server software solution for those users who do not run
Windows NT Server or Windows 2000. Personal web server is free to download from Microsoft's web site at http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/ntoptionpack/askwiz.asp , beware, it's about 35 MB to download! Internet Information Server is Microsoft's professional web server. IIS 5.0 comes shipped with Windows NT Server. ASP 3.0 ships with IIS 5.0. ASP 2.0 comes with IIS 4.0. IIS 5.0 comes with Windows 2000, although it is not installed automatically when Windows 2000 is installed. IIS 5.0 is downloadable from Microsoft's web site at http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/ntoptionpack/askwiz.asp. As IIS and PWS run only on windows platform, you may think that ASP pages must run on IIS or PWS as web server. This is not true. However, thanks to some companies that have created softwares to execute ASP pages on non-Windows platforms. One of these products is Halycon Software's Instant ASP, often abbrivated as iASP. Another such product is Chili!soft's Chili!ASP. These products run varius servers such as Apache, Sun Web Server, Java Web Server, Netscape Enterproce Server. These products can run on number of platforms like Linux, Sun Solaris, Apple Mac OS, IBM/AIX. |
